چکیده
Abstract This paper analyzes the dynamic effects of economic disasters, captured by cumulative decline in output at least 10% over 1 or more years, on disposable income inequality a sample 99 countries annual period 1960–2017. Based impulse response functions derived from robust local projections method, we find that disasters increase 4%, with overall effect being statistically significant and highly persistent 20 years following shock. When repeat analysis categorizing based groups regions, strongest are felt high-income (8%), Europe, Central Asia North America (16%) taken together, as primarily driven ex-socialist economies. Though lesser magnitude, increases also observed for low-, upper-middle-income economies, regions Latin Caribbean, Middle East Africa (MENA) South Asia, to some extent Sub-Saharan Africa. Our findings have important policy implications. suggest avoidance crises is paramount importance ensure sustainability welfare state, which turn would allow sound redistributive policies reduce inequality, can help indirectly reducing negative impact rare asset markets. An empirical note on economic freedom and income inequality∗
I report estimates for a fixed-effects model of country-level Gini coefficients as a function of economic freedom along with relevant control variables. Gini coefficients are drawn from the UNU/WIDER World Income Inequality Database Version 2.0a, while economic freedom is measured by the Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom of the World index. Controls are included for per capita income, politic...
متن کاملDisasters and Development: Natural Disasters, Credit Constraints and Economic Growth
We demonstrate, using a simple two-period equilibrium model of the economy, the potential effects of extreme event occurrences such as natural or humanitarian disasters on economic growth over the mediumto long-term. In particular, we focus on the effect of such shocks on investment. We examine two polar cases; an unconstrained economy where agents have access to perfect capital markets, versus...
متن کاملEconomic inequality and economic growth
The paper enquires into the relationship between economic inequality and economic growth, but different from others, it also studies the relationship between inequality and economic growth in the situation where consideration of effect of factor movement is included. The paper tends to answer the questions such as whether inequality should be eradicated completely. Panel data models are used fo...
متن کاملA note on Talagrand’s transportation inequality and logarithmic Sobolev inequality
We give by simple arguments sufficient conditions, so called Lyapunov conditions, for Talagrand’s transportation information inequality and for the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. Those sufficient conditions work even in the case where the Bakry-Emery curvature is not lower bounded. Several new examples are provided.
